Advice from Aestheticians

Spring is here and the soaring temperatures and heat from the Kansas sun will soon be looming over us. Sun exposure can cause noticeable pigmentation changes, lines and wrinkle formation and even worse…SKIN CANCER. While it is tempting to go outside and enjoy the sun and warm weather, there are a few things you can do to keep the healthy, glowing skin you worked so hard to obtain this past fall and winter. The staff and physicians of Advanced Aesthetics have the tools you need to achieve your goals.

It has been proven that free radicals cause cellular damage and changes to the skin’s pigmentation and texture. So what exactly are free radicals? Free radicals are unpaired electrons in our system that cause damage to our skin and other body organs. Noticeable signs of free radical damage include aging skin, inflammation and cancer. Our surrounding environment is filled with free radicals such as pollutants, cigarette smoke, food pesticides and herbicides, radiation and the sun’s harmful rays. All these free radicals have a cumulative effect on our body over time.

How do you fight and prevent free radical damage? Avoiding free radicals is probably the best option however it is not always possible or practical. Another way to prevent free radical damage to healthy tissue is through the use of antioxidants. Eating fruits and vegetables allows you to take in antioxidants as a dietary supplement. Using topical applications of potent antioxidants such as SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic or Phloretin CF can also protect your skin from free radical damage. Topical antioxidants should contain products with vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E (tocopherol) and Ferulic Acid. The proper use of sunscreen combined with the topical application of antioxidant vitamins can maximize protection against free radicals.

In addition to the dangers of free radicals, it is also proven that sun exposure causes direct damage to the DNA of skin cells which leads to photo aging and skin cancer. Because skin cancer can be life-threatening at any age, you must remember to apply a quality sunscreen such as SkinCeuticals sunscreens everyday as part of your normal morning routine. Using sunscreens everyday isn’t gender or age specific. EVERYONE should use sunscreen everyday. Daily moisturizers that claim to provide sun protection are not sufficient to protect the skin from the harmful cancer-causing rays. Quality sunscreens should contain products such as benzenes, PARSOL 1789, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to provide the UVA/UVB coverage needed. Remember, sunscreens do not block the sun, they simply screen it. Regardless of the type of sunscreen you apply, avoiding direct sun exposure during the hottest times of the day is the best way to protect your skin.

In addition to the use of topical antioxidants and a quality sunscreen, other products will help to maintain your clear, glowing complexion. Advanced Aesthetics is excited to introduce SkinCeuticals’ Advanced Brightening System. This five-product system includes Phloretin CF, Retexturing Activator, Pigment Regulator, Retinol 0.5, and Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30 and is clinically proven to minimize the appearance of UV-induced skin damage by preventing future damage, correcting existing damage, and protecting healthy skin.

Phloretin CF is the antioxidant needed to fight the formation of free radicals, while Pigment Regulator lightens and reduces existing hyper pigmentation, improves skin tone and protects skin from future discolorations by inhibiting the production of excess melanin and breaking down existing clusters of melanin on the skin’s surface.

Retexturing Activator is a serum that surpasses the results you may see with a 20% glycolic acid treatment. Retexturing Activator provides exfoliation and hydration to visibly diminish superficial lines, providing softer, smoother texture to the skin.

In addition to these products, EVERYONE needs some form of retinol or vitamin A and a quality sun protection product. The Advanced Brightening System combines every product you will need to achieve and maintain radiant skin free of excessive pigmentation, lines and wrinkles.

The medical aestheticians of Advanced Aesthetics provide free skin care analysis to recommend products specifically for you. Call today to schedule your complimentary appointment.

And as always, lots of love in 2010…
