Aesthetician Corner

Advice from Aesthetician
Roya Cohan

Roya CohanI can tell you from personal experience that sun damage is the number one cause of premature aging to your skin. I look back at pictures of my neck and chest from just a few years ago and I realize how much my skin has aged as a result of changes in  pigmentation and texture caused by sun damage. In my time as an aesthetician I have learned about how my skin can be damaged and what I can do to improve and maintain its appearance.

Repeated exposure to harmful UV rays from the sun and tanning beds causes a breakdown and depletion of collagen. It also inhibits the production of healthy elasticin fibers needed to maintain a youthful look. This leads to withered, sagging skin with a thick, leathery look as well as sun spots, freckles, broken blood vessels and skin cancer. Exposure to the sun increases melanin production, which appears on the skin as age spots or freckles. Damaging UV rays from the sun also break down the structural walls of the blood vessels resulting in broken capillaries.

The good news is you CAN make changes and now is the time to do so. You can begin treatments following the holiday season and the parties and festivities that accompany it or you may opt to begin treatments now and use the holiday season as your recovery time. Whether you choose to start a treatment plan before or after the holiday season, winter is the best time to begin correcting past sun damage since your direct exposure to the sun is limited.

To prevent future damage you need to avoid tanning beds and UV exposure to your skin. It is also incredibly important to commit to a quality skin care regimen that includes exfoliation, topical antioxidants, retinol use, moisturizing agents and broad spectrum sun protection. Keeping your skin moisturized is also important because it maintains water volume and helps the skin stay hydrated and plump. The sun diminishes moisture and natural oils that lubricate the skin and leaves it dry and flaky if you are not using adequate moisturizing products.

The extent of your sun damage determines which treatment is most beneficial for you. Skin resurfacing, either ablative or non-ablative, will help decrease the appearance of withered skin. It destroys the top layer of damaged skin while stimulating the dermis to produce collagen and elastin fibers. Ablative skin resurfacing requires a minimal downtime of 5 to 14 days, depending on the aggressiveness of your treatment. Non-ablative skin resurfacing has no downtime but requires more treatments than ablative resurfacing. Multiple treatments of ablative or non-ablative resurfacing or a combination of treatments may be needed depending on the amount and depth of sun damage.

Intense Pulse Light treatments  (also referred to as IPL, photo facials and Photorejuvenation) target abnormal pigmentation such as brown spots, freckles and rosacea (redness to the face). IPL treatments minimally stimulate collagen and destroy broken facial capillaries. Most individuals say this treatment feels like a rubber band snapping the skin, an uncomfortable but not overly painful sensation. Immediately following treatment the targeted pigmented areas appear darker. Within a few days the darkened area will scab and flake off leaving the treated area substantially lighter than it was prior to the treatment. Five to six treatments are usually needed.

Regardless of the treatment path you choose, make sure to wear sunscreen every day to prevent further damage and discoloration. If you can see the sun damage to your skin, then other people can see it too! Call today to schedule your consult with one of the board certified physicians of Advanced Aesthetics to determine the treatment protocol that will most benefit you.

Once you completed your treatment plan, schedule a free skin care consult with one of our aestheticians to find out the best ways to maintain and show off your new skin!
