Aesthetician Tips

   Roya Cohan

As the temperatures rise, so does the incidence of skin cancer, most notably melanoma (the deadliest form of all skin cancer.) Physicians are seeing an alarming increase in the number of patients diagnosed with melanoma, which can often be prevented.

Education and early detection are important steps in fighting skin cancer. Your physician plays a very important role in this battle by providing skin exams and instructing patients to perform self examinations. You should contact your physician immediately if you find a new spot or lesion, or one that has changed in size, shape or color when performing a monthly self exam.

Education about the correct use of an effective sunscreen is also an important step in preventing skin cancer. Sunscreens do not block the sun; they simply screen the sun’s rays.

  • Be certain your sunscreen offers UVA and UVB protection. Contact your physician if you are unsure if the sunscreen you are using provides UVA and UVB protection.
  • Look for sunscreens that contain products such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, benzenes, PARSOL 1789, Mexoryl or Helioplex.
  • Daily moisturizers and makeup that contain sunscreen are not sufficient to protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun.
  • Sunscreen should be applied every day, including during winter months, to provide the best protection against skin cancer.
  • The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying at least 2 tablespoons of sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplying it every two hours or immediately after excessive sweating or swimming.
  • Do not forget to apply sunscreen to your neck, chest, ears, hands and any exposed skin on your head.

Other things you can do to reduce your risk of skin cancer include staying in the shade during peak hours of the day and wearing a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Not only will these practices protect your skin, but you will also see a decrease in the formation and appearance of lines, wrinkles and excessive pigmentation.
