It's that time of year again for reminders about the dangers of the harmful Kansas rays. Not only do you need to be concerned with protecting yourself, do not forget about protecting your loved ones. Sun protection must be applied every day of the year and not merely in the hot summer months to truly protect against aging skin and skin cancer.
Most individuals are not aware of the different types of sun rays and the different types of products needed to protect from these rays. UVA rays are the "aging rays" and are strong year around, penetrating clouds and even glass. These rays cause DNA changes and are the chief cause of aging. UVB rays are the "burning rays" and only reach the skin when there are no clouds and do not penetrate glass. The strength of these rays depends on the season and time of day in most areas.
How can we protect ourselves and our loved ones? The CDC recommends the following options for sun protection:
- Seek shade, especially during midday hours.
- Wear clothing to protect exposed skin.
- Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade your face, head, ears, and neck.
- Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible.
- The only products that provide UVA protection are: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, micronized zinc, Parsol 1789, Mexoryl, and Helioplex.
