The extreme heat of this past summer has finally disappeared, leaving us to enjoy the beautiful weather of September. Since fall is here this is the perfect time to address the additional pigmentation, lines and wrinkles the hot summer sun has left behind on your face, neck, chest and hands.
Pigmentation issues, lines, wrinkles, tone and texture can be addressed in many different formats depending on a person's unique needs. We can recommend specific skin care products that will work to manage pigmentation and other skin issues over time to improve skin quality. These products help prevent further pigmentation but rarely remove existing pigmentation issues. In addition to these topical products (some over-the-counter and some prescription) the physicians can also recommend specific light-based treatments to diminish signs of pigmentation and address changes to the skin's surface caused by the intense Kansas sun.
Light-based treatments that may be recommended to treat the effects of sun damage and environmental pollutants that create wrinkles and pigment irregularities include photorejuvenation and Sciton laser treatments.
Photorejuvenation: IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-ablative treatment to improve the appearance of photoaged skin, remove age spots, most brown pigments and reduce redness to the skin caused by rosacea or broken capillaries. Photorejuvenation can be for the face and body. To achieve results patients will require a series of treatments performed once every three to four weeks. This treatment is ideal for patients with active lifestyles because the procedure requires no downtime.
Sciton Laser Treatments: A laser beam is delivered through a computer controlled device that allows ablation and coagulation depth for Profractional Laser treatments that provide "dermal resurfacing" and MicroLaser and Laser Peels that provide "epidermal resurfacing".
There are two approaches to laser resurfacing, full field resurfacing and fractional resurfacing. During full field resurfacing (MicroLaser Peel and Laser Peel) the entire surface area of the skin is ablated at controlled depths, allowing it to be either shallow or deep. Full field resurfacing removes the top layers of skin which leaves the skin with a healthy youthful glow. During fractional field resurfacing (Profractional Laser Resurfacing), the laser removes pinpoint columns of skin at a very controlled deep depth, leaving the surrounding tissue intact. The laser penetrates very deeply for effective collagen regeneration, while the surrounding untreated skin promotes rapid healing. This is beneficial to stimulate collagen for improvement of acne scars, deep lines and wrinkles.
MicroLaser Peel: This is the best procedure for individuals who want more noticeable results than those from a microdermabrasion or chemical peel, but don't want the down time of a laser peel. The MicroLaser Peel is a less aggressive laser peel that precisely ablates the outermost layer of skin (routinely 20-50 microns).
This procedure is perfect for eliminating fine lines, sun spots and tired-looking skin. Multiple treatments may be needed to achieve desired results. Typically this procedure is repeated two to four times, and spaced six to eight weeks apart.
Laser Peel: the Laser Peel safely removes layers of skin to a depth determined by the physician. The depth of this procedure will depend on the skin condition and the individual's available amount of down time. The physician can treat the skin with the exact amount of energy needed (no more and no less) to stimulate the growth of new collagen. The skin surface will regrow with fresh, healthy, skin cells leaving a younger, rejuvenated appearance. This is perfect to improve skin tone, texture and to eliminate deep wrinkles, even in difficult areas like upper lip lines and crow's feet.
Profractional Laser Resurfacing: A laser micro beam is utilized to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin which are surrounded by healthy, untreated skin. The areas treated are routinely 300 to 800 microns deep, and stimulate collagen formation. This plumps the skin and smoothes deep wrinkles, lines and scars. Because only a fraction of the skin is directly treated with the laser, healing time is quicker and down time is shorter than full laser resurfacing. Profractional Laser Resurfacing may be combined with IPL, MicroLaser Peel and the Laser Peel. Profractional treatments are typically done in a series of one to four treatments, spaced three to six weeks apart.
